When you enter in this yard and step into the home where Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac lived, time takes you back to the 19th century.

In the center of Negotin municipality, tucked away by the passage of time, you will be greeted by the birthplace of one of the most important musical figures in Serbia, the composer - Stevan Stojanovic Mokranjac. In this house, our great composer made his first steps, spoke the first words, but also learned the first notes and beats. While listening the Rukoveti, here you can see the piano on which Mokranjac played, a desk with a silver inkwell and a pen, family portraits, a fireplace that remained authentic ...

Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac was born in Negotin, on January 9th 1856. He introduced the Serbian national spirit into the world of music. He is considered the most important musical creator of Serbian romanticism. He is one of the 100 most important Serbs elected by the Board of Academicians of SANU (1993). His most famous works are: Rukoveti, Primorski napevi, Liturgija, Opelo, Kozar, Statije and others. In 1899 he founded the first permanent music school in Belgrade. He was a collector of folk melodies, both secular and ecclesiastical, about which he wrote the first folklore studies, and that is why he is considered the founder of Serbian music science. He contributed to the founding of the "Association of Singing Societies" and the "First String Quartet".

Today, the house of Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac is a museum building that has the status of a cultural monument of exceptional importance. If you haven't been before, don't miss to visit it.
