Church of the Holy Mother of God

The Timok Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church

Church of the Holy Mother of God is located in the village of Donja Kamenica, 15 km southeast of Knjaževac. It is an unknown landowner’s endowment and dates from the first half of the 14th century

This church represents the most original and the most valuable art monument of the Timok Diocese. Its architecture represents a combination of Romanticism, Gothic and Moravian architecture.

Church paintings are of outstanding value, both in style and in iconography. Some of the frescoes are unique in Serbian medieval painting. Those with outstanding artistic values are: ‘The Last Supper’, ‘Annunciation’, ‘Mother of God’, ‘Theotokos and Christ Child’, ‘Holy Mother's Ascension’ and a unique presentation of two holy warriors Theodore of Amasea and Theodore of Heraclea, embraced on horses, as well as cycles from the life of Saint Parascheva of the Balkans.
